This painting was made for the Dutch tv-program The New Vermeer. The public was invited to recreate one of the missing paintings of Vermeer. We know they’ve existed because tere are detailed inventory lists of Vermeer’s heritage. 

Venus Mercury and Jupiter was one of Vermeer’s earlier and bigger works. The contestants were free in their choice of materials and interpretation of the myth depicted, but not in dimensions.

I chose to paint my characters in contemporary clothing but the background and setting is classical, as is the technique and medium. The painting was selected for the finals.
